Identifying the genomic features of SARS-CoV-2 and human genetic factors
affecting the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to provide critical insights
for managing outbreaks. These efforts aim to uncover genetic markers linked to
COVID-19 progression in the Bahraini population and biological pathways that
could lead to potential drug targets. This project seeks to achieve the
following objectives:
1. Analyzing
the Genomic Diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in Bahrain
The findings from this analysis will support the design and evaluation of
diagnostic tests, enable effective tracking and tracing of outbreaks, predict
future outbreaks and their patterns, and identify potential national
intervention strategies in Bahrain.
2. Identifying
Human Genetic Determinants of COVID-19 Susceptibility, Severity, and Outcomes
in the Bahraini Population
2.a Identify genes, pathways, and
mechanisms related to COVID-19 susceptibility and severity in the
Bahraini population that could be targeted with therapeutics.
2.b Uncover monogenic errors underlying
severe forms of COVID-19.
2.c Determine monogenic factors
contributing to resistance against COVID-19 infection.
3. Developing
Screening Tests for COVID-19
Create tests to evaluate susceptibility, severity, and resistance to COVID-19
in the Bahraini population.
4. Developing a Bahraini Population
Variation Database
Establish a comprehensive genetic variation database to support ongoing
research and public health initiatives.
